2020 Commitment to Excellence Award Recipient

Jose Gutiérrez is currently in his ninth year teaching Spanish at Okemos High School. Before coming to Okemos he taught fifth and sixth grade in another school district and spent time at the college level with Michigan State University. In addition, this is his sixth year as the World Language Club advisor.

 

Jose is originally from Mexico and was born in Morelia, Michoacán. Prior to moving to the United States, he was a lawyer working for the Mexican federal government for 4 years. Once in the United States he received his teaching certification from Grand Valley State University.

 

In his free time, he loves spending time with his lovely wife Renée and their 4 children, José, Elizabeth, David and Mateo. He enjoys being outside, running, bicycling, walking his 3 dogs, and playing tennis and soccer. Jose also enjoys cooking, dancing, painting, and playing the ukulele.

 

Jose shares that, “I have truly enjoyed teaching these years at Okemos High School and being able to share with my students my beautiful language and culture. I feel very lucky to be part of this amazing school district and work everyday with the best administrators, staff and students.”
