2016 Commitment to Excellence Award Recipient
Cindy Erickson’s first experiences at Cornell Elementary came in her role as a parent volunteer in all of her sons’ classrooms. She learned a great deal from her exposure to many great teachers during those years. In 1999, after working a few semesters as a long-term substitute teacher, she landed the job of her dreams teaching Kindergarten at Cornell Elementary. Seventeen years later, she is still in the same classroom loving every minute. She finds watching the young learners develop emotionally, socially and academically over the course of the year very rewarding.
Cindy received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University. She has also taken over 30 credits of graduate classes at Michigan State University for continuing education, and has especially enjoyed classes in the area of Special Education.
Cindy and her husband, Phil, have lived in Okemos since 1987. All three of their sons, Philip, Jack and Ryan, attended Okemos Public Schools for K-12. Cindy and Phil have many fond memories of their time in the bleachers, on the sidelines, and in the audience for concerts and plays. In her free time, she enjoys walking with friends, making soap and spending time in the Upper Peninsula.
