2016 Commitment to Excellence Award Recipient

Marian Murembya did her student teaching in a first grade classroom at Central Elementary in 1989. During that year she also began coaching track at Kinawa, where she learned how much she enjoyed middle schoolers. She started teaching sixth grade at Kinawa in 1991, the same year her daughter entered sixth grade there. She taught language arts, social studies, and math at Kinawa until 2001. After her first son was born, Marian wanted to teach part-time, so she began sharing a 5th grade classroom at Hiawatha with Mrs. Schoen. Marian returned to full time at Kinawa in 2009.

Marian is married and has two grown daughters, four grandchildren, and two sons still in Okemos schools (the youngest of whom is currently a sixth grader at Kinawa). She enjoys running, working out, reading, and traveling.
