Charles & Maria Bill, 2008 "Dan C. Wertz Founder's Award" Recipient
Chuck and Maria Bill moved to Okemos in 1992. Their children have attended Okemos Public Schools and the oldest is now in his first year at The University of Michigan. In addition to the excellent academic programs, they feel fortunate that their children are involved in the choral and theatrical programs.
Maria earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (1987) at The University of Miami. She was a pediatric nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital for eight years and was the associate head nurse of a pediatric unit when she left Florida to take care of her own children and husband in Okemos. In addition to volunteering at Cornell Elementary, she has been the Hospitality Chairperson for the past 4 years at Chippewa Middle School and is serving her second year as Okemos High School PTO co-president.
Chuck received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry from Western Illinois University in 1973. He received his Ph.D. in Anatomy from The University of Kansas Medical Center in 1978. After a postdoctoral fellowship at The University of Michigan, he attended Michigan State University where he graduated from medical school in 1985. Upon completion of his residency in neurological surgery at The University of Miami, he joined the neurosurgical group here in Lansing. Chuck is head of the section of Neurosurgery at Sparrow Hospital. He is a lecturer at Michigan State University and teaches residents in Neurology, General Surgery and Emergency Medicine. His group heads the local chapter of Think First, a national organization for the prevention of injury, and they also support the Greater Lansing Food Bank.
In addition to supporting the Okemos Public School system, Chuck and Maria are strong supporters of Michigan State University, their own alma maters and Interlochen Center for the Arts.
2007 Dan C. Wertz Founder's Award Recipients, Lee and Linda Gerard
Lee and Linda Gerard have been active Okemos community members for the past twenty-seven years. Both have made lifetime commitments to education, church, and community. They are Honorary Founders of the Okemos Education Foundation, and Lee is a past recipient of the Commitment to Excellence Award. The Gerards are the proud parents of three daughters, all of whom have graduated from Okemos High School.Lee received his Bachelors from Hope College, in religion and education, his Masters from WMU in curriculum development and his PhD from MSU in educational administration. Linda earned both her bachelors and masters from MSU, in elementary education and language arts. Lee recently retired from the Okemos school system where he began in April 1980 as curriculum and personnel director and completed that career in June 2007 as superintendent of schools. He was instrumental in the development of the district's K-12 curriculum and the district's 2006-2010 Strategic Plan. Linda pursued her passion for teaching in the school districts of Wyoming, Northville, Grandville and Laingsburg, Michigan, and contributed many innovative ideas to her profession. She also supervised student teacher interns for MSU.
Lee is a past-president and current member of the Haslett-Okemos Rotary Club; a past chairman and current member of the Foundation in Support of the Ingham County Medical Care Facility; and a founder of the Okemos Community Education Winter Walden Ski Club.
2006 Dan C. Wertz Founder's Award Recipient, Jay Smith and Peggy Smith
Jay and Peggy Smith are both graduates of CMU. Peggy earned her B.S. in Education, and then taught for seven years before deciding to stay home with three children, who are all students of Okemos Public Schools. Peggy has served on several boards, including St. Martha CCW and Lansing Figure Skating Club, and also many school committees and booster groups. She is currently finishing a master's degree in K-12 literacy.
Jay earned his B.S. in Industrial Management and Supervision and has been employed by The Christman Company for 22 years, where he is the senior vice president in charge of construction operations and a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. He is affiliated with Associated General Contractors (AGC), a past Board member of Highfields, Inc., and a Lansing Rotarian.
Jay and Peggy have lived in Okemos for 20 years and are founding members of St. Martha's Parish.
2005 Dan C. Wertz Founder's Award Recipient, Delta Dental Plan of Michigan
Delta Dental Plan of Michigan, headquartered in Okemos, is a nonprofit service corporation created in 1957 to advance and promote the improvement of oral health. Today, Delta Dental is the most successful provider of dental benefits in the Midwest, serving nearly 5.1 million members. Delta Dental Plan of Michigan, which also operates Delta Dental Plan of Ohio and Delta Dental Plan of Indiana, provides coverage to more than 3.7 million people in over 2,400 Michigan-based groups.
The tri-state operation is a member of the Delta Dental Plans Association, a nationwide system of dental health service plans. Together, the plans provide coverage to more than 45 million Americans and operate the nation's largest network of participating dentists.
Social responsibility and corporate citizenship are woven into Delta Dental's fabric. For nearly 50 years, Delta Dental has maintained a strong tradition of community service. Through corporate donations and employee volunteerism, Delta Dental supports activities and organizations that typically fall into the categories of health and human enrichment, and civic and community affairs.
2004 Founder's Award Recipient, Dan C. Wertz
Dan C. Wertz is Superintendent Emeritus of the Okemos Public Schools where he served for 23 years. Before coming to Okemos, Dan was a middle school science teacher, Director of Instruction at the International School in Bangkok, Thailand, and assistant superintendent in an Indiana school district. Dan received his doctorate from Indiana University. He is the recipient of the Michigan State School of Education Crystal Apple Award for Excellence in Education.
In recent years, Dan has conducted research and published a number of articles and a book about resilient behaviors of school leaders. Since retirement, Dan has presented seminars throughout Michigan, in California, and in Mexico
The Okemos Education Foundation was created as a result of superintendent Wertz's recommendation to the Board of Education in 1984. He has seen the immeasurable impact the OEF has had on staff members' ability to explore and implement new ideas and techniques that enhance student learning
Dan's wife, Linda, is a teacher in the Williamston School District. Dan and Linda have four children. Daughter Natalie McLaughlin works for a credit union in Plymouth and teaches financial seminars. She and her husband have two children. Scott Wertz is a major in the Marine Reserve and a pilot with American Airlines. Scott and his wife have three children. Todd Wertz lives with his wife and two children in Taiwan. Todd is an executive there with the K-Swiss shoe company. Nathan Wertz is a physical therapist. He and his wife life in East Lansing and have one child.
2003 Founder's Award Recipient, Howard Weyers
Howard Weyers is the founder and CEO of WEYCO, Incorporated, located in Okemos. WEYCO sells and administers self-funded group benefits to local and national companies.
To say that Howard is an active community member is a significant understatement. Over the years, Howard has donated his time and money to multiple causes in the greater Lansing area, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the YMCA, St. Vincent Home for Children, Special Olympics, the performing arts, and Impression 5 Museum. Currently, Howard serves as chairman of the Cancer Center Giving Club at Sparrow Hospital. The group raises funds for equipment, and provides transportation for cancer patients to the Center.
Here in Okemos, Howard has been a great supporter of kids' athletic programs. He worked with the both the Okemos Baseball/Softball Club and the Okemos Athletic Boosters for years. Howard and his wife, Kathleen, became founders of the OEF in 1997.
Howard is a former high school teacher and high school and college football coach. He received a B.A. from Thiel College and attended Rutgers University to receive an M.A. in education. He and his wife, Kathleen, a Kinawa teacher for 19 years, live in Okemos. They have two children, both of whom attended the Okemos Public Schools.
2002 Founder's Award Recipient, Robert Miller, Jr.
Robert Miller, Jr. - Okemos High School Class of 1967, Michigan State University Class of 1972, Certified Public Accountant with Maner, Costerisan & Ellis, P.C. in Lansing - grew up in Okemos, attended Wardcliff, Central and the high school (Chippewa Middle School now).
Bob's children attended Okemos schools and graduated from Okemos schools. Dan Wertz asked me to be the Treasurer for Okemos Education Foundation (OEF) when it was first formed and I became President a year or two later. A member of the Founders of Okemos Education Foundation, I returned to service for OEF as assistant to the Treasurer to provide voluntary accounting services for the past three years. Okemos schools gave me a great foundation for my life and I think OEF is a great opportunity to provide support for innovative teachers and students to foster creative learning experiences at Okemos Public Schools.
2000 Founder's Award Recipient, Michael Atkins
Michael Atkins is a Senior Principal of the law firm Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, PLC, specializing in areas of telecommunications, commercial, and gaming law. Miller Canfield is the largest law firm in Michigan and one of the nation's leading firms in its specialty areas. Michael has practiced law with Miller, Canfield since his graduation from Indiana University School of Law in 1978. He also earned an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance from Indiana University.
Mr. Atkins has served the community in many ways. He was a member of the Okemos Board of Education 1994 through 1998; was chairman of the ballot committee of the 1999 Okemos Public Schools millage and bond election, was co-President (with wife Lynn) of the Okemos Athletic Boosters; was the chairman of the East lansing/Meridian Township regional parks and recreation task force; coached the Kinawa Middle School Science Olympiad team, and has been a member of the bards and long-time coach with the Okemos Athletic Club, the East Side Soccer Association, and the Okemos Baseball/Softball Club. Michael became a member of the Okemos Education Foundation board of directors this year to continue his support of the schools and community.
Michael and Lynn Atkins have been married for twenty-five years and are the proud parents of Jason, David, Carey and Meghan.
1999 Founder's Award Recipient, Ross Woodstock
Ross Woodstock is Vice President and General Manager at WLNS Newscenter 6. He began his career as a radio announcer in 1975 and advanced into television in 1981. During his tenure, WLNS has become a number one rated local television news station widely recognized for its special programming such as town hall meetings on important community issues, political debates, and the annual MDA telethon.
Mr. Woodstock serves on the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He has also served on the original boards for the Michigan Festival and Share Mid-Michigan projects as well as spent many years involved in youth sports. A past chairman of the Okemos Education Foundation board, Ross brought focus, organization, and fundraising to the group. Under his leadership, the foundation's Endowment Fund was established. Through this fund, the lives of many students will be enhanced for years to come. Ross continues his support of the schools and community with time and energy focused on enriching the lives of others.
Ross and his wife, Sharen, recently celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary. They are Okemos residents who have two children. Son Michael is in college and daughter Nicole attends Okemos High School.
1998 Founder's Award Recipient, Keith Schroeder
Keith Schroeder is owner and President of Schroeder Builders, Incorporated. He was born and raised in central Michigan where he learned carpentry from his father, then ventured nto property development and home building. Because of his broad vision nad high standards, Keith quickly built his own successful business providing quality homes for area residents.Mr. Schroeder is also President of the Meridian Alliance of Developers. Under his guidance, this organization provided both counsel and funds to construct walkways into the wetlands at Okemos High School. This project allows students and community members alike to study the flora, fauna and wetland wildlife year round.
Throughout the years, Mr. Schroeder has earned a reputation for intelligience and integrity. His wisdom has provided counsel to many indivituals and organizations. He supports the community with time, energy, and funds on enriching the lives of others.
