OKEMOS TEACHER EXCELLENCE WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The Okemos Education Foundation Monday announced the names of six Okemos teachers who will receive the group's 2003 "Commitment to Excellence" awards. OEF extended its congratulations to Rachel Freeman of Okemos High School, Linda Gregorian of Okemos Elementary Schools, Sue Hallman and Dianna Long of Bennett Woods Elementary School and Barb Kissling and Charles Meddaugh of Kinawa Middle School.
"These dedicated educators embody the highest standards," said Jack Hettiger, OEF Chairman. "They've positively impacted the lives of many hundreds of Okemos students, their families and the community. They're a source of real pride in our school system."
Every fall, OEF recognizes several Okemos teachers with its "Commitment to Excellence" awards, which are based on a number of criteria. A prospective winner inspires and motivates students, demonstrates innovative teaching techniques, promotes the welfare of students and strives to be a role model through leadership and community partnerships.
"There are several important features in any highly successful school system," Hettiger added. "But attracting teachers and administrators as passionate and talented as these is critical. They all deserve a moment in the spotlight."

OEF also announced that Mr. Howard Weyers, the founder of Weyco Corporation of Okemos, will receive the group's annual "Founders' Award" for his ongoing support of public education in Okemos. Mr. Weyers was among the earliest supporters of the Okemos Education Foundation and has been a supporter of Okemos schools for many years. Mr. Weyers' children attended Okemos schools and he has been actively involved in athletic boosters and other programs.
Tickets for the 2003 "Commitment to Excellence" awards cost $30 and $12 for children. They are available at all Okemos Public Schools, the Okemos Schools administration office and at Okemos Community Education. Tickets are also available by calling 349-9460, extension 2002.
The Okemos Education Foundation was founded in 1984. It is a non-profit organization whose primary aim is to raise funds to help supplement Okemos school budgets. In addition to its annual "Commitment to Excellence" awards, it awards grants and is building an endowment. Earlier this year, OEF's successful "Okemos Cares" campaign raised $236,000 to partially alleviate a multi-million dollar funding deficit in the district.
