2001 RECIPIENTS OF "COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE" AWARD


Cheryl Field is a seven-year member of the Okemos School faculty.  She began with the Community Education program, and now is assistant administrator of the Michigan State Readiness Program (MSRP), located at Bennett Woods Elementary School.  MSRP addresses the needs of four-year-old children, who may enter Okemos Schools as “at risk” students.  Last year, Cheryl was co-writer of a grant which assures a full day of continuous, developmentally appropriate activities for “at risk” children.

Cheryl earned a BS degree at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.  She has taught in Wisconsin and Arizona, and has extensive experience teaching disadvantaged, low-income and multi-cultural preschool children. 

Cheryl and Dan, her husband of 32-years, have reared four children and live in Okemos.

Barbara Meloche served Okemos Public Schools for 27 years.  During that time, her duties included teaching at Cornell and Edgewood Elementary, serving as reading consultant and finally as Edgewood Elementary School principal.  Barbara chaired Okemos’ language arts and mathematics committees, and presented at the State Reading Association conference, Elementary and Middle School Principals Conference, and has taught at Oregon State University.

She earned a BA degree at Sienna Heights University, and a MA degree from Michigan State University.  Barbara also has completed postgraduate literacy work and earned educational administration certification from MSU.  Currently, she works as a consultant for “Ensuring Student Success”.

Barbara and her husband, Ron, have reared a son and a daughter.

       
Rosaile “Ree” Huber has taught in the Okemos system for a decade.  Currently, she serves as the Reading Consultant at Chippewa Middle School.  Ree began the TASK (general education support) program at Okemos’ middle schools, is the Language Arts co-coordinator and serves on the District Advisory Council.

Ree has previously taught classes ranging from Kindergarten to ninth grade in nine other school districts across the country.  She also taught in England with the U.S. Department of Defense Schools.  She earned a BS degree in English from Southwest Texas University, and a MA degree in reading from the University of Nebraska. 

Ree and her husband, Jim, live in Okemos and have two daughters and a son-in-law.

Bonnie Robison has served Okemos Community Education for the past 13 years.  She has co-authored successful grant requests to support the development of four-year-old, at-risk children in a variety of programs.  This year, she and Cheryl Field initiated a new program called “Young Fives”.

Bonnie has earned a BS degree in elementary education and child development from Utah State University, and an MS degree from Michigan State University in curriculum and teaching with an early childhood specialty.

 She and her family have lived in Okemos for the past 25 years, where all five of her children graduated from Okemos Public Schools.

       
Amy Huntley joined the faculty of Okemos Schools in 1991, as a teacher at Kinawa Middle School.  Within the Okemos School District, she has taught students from grades seven through twelve.  Amy now teaches English at Okemos High School. 

She has earned BA and MA degrees from Michigan State University, and serves on the Language Arts Core Curriculum Committee and the OHS Building Planning Team.  Amy has presented at various workshops, is published in the Language Arts Journal of Michigan and has created classroom teaching materials for Scholastic Scope Magazine.

Amy and her husband, Jeff Mackson, live in East Lansing.

Barbara Skinner was recruited by Okemos Public Schools in 1974 after teaching experience in El Monte and Ojai, California.  Currently, she teaches third grade at Edgewood Elementary School, but she has also taught third through fifth grades at Cornell Elementary and Bennett Woods Elementary. 

Barbara has served on school improvement teams at Edgewood, Cornell and the District levels.  She also is a member of the Mathematics Core Curriculum Committee and has led training sessions in mathematics.  She earned BS and MA degrees from Michigan State University.

She and her husband, Gil, live in Okemos, and reared two sons who both graduated from Okemos High School.

       
Marilyn Kesler has taught orchestra at Kinawa Middle School and Okemos High School since 1966.  She is founder and director of the Okemos Community Education Suzuki Program, and is past president of the Michigan Chapter of the American String Teachers Association.  Frequently a guest conductor and cello clinician, she is an author-editor of several cello publication for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and was honored by the American String Teachers Association as the National String Music Educator of the Year.

Marilyn earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Indiana University, and a Master of Music Education from Southern Illinois University.

Friends note that if you ever need to find Marilyn, she can be found in the cello section of the Greater Lansing Symphony or mowing her lawn on her tractor.

Cathy Staudt has served Okemos Public Schools for 17 years.  Currently, she teaches Kindergarten at Cornell Elementary, and also has taught at Edgewood Elementary.  She had earned distinction before coming to Okemos, being named Teacher of the Year by Brighton Public Schools. 

Cathy has served on the Board of Directors of Michigan Science Teachers, and was a test writer for the first fourth-grade science MEAP.  She has been a member of the Okemos Early Childhood Committee, Elementary Report Card Committee, and currently, Cornell’s School Improvement Committee.  She earned BA and MA degrees from Michigan State University.

Cathy and her husband, Tim, live in Okemos and are actively involved rearing their three sons.
